Geomorphology suggests that the candidate landing sites for future human exploration (Starship missions) in Northern Amazonis Planitia might host large amounts of ground ice, likely excess ice, just a few cm below the surface. Said evidence includes ice-related landforms such as thermal contraction polygons, craters expanded by sublimation, brain terrain, etc., but most of all an ice-exposing impact crater that excavated directly into the near-surface ice. The ice-exposing impact crater, which can be considered as ground truth, is a strong piece of evidence and contradicts SWIM models that indicated low to no chances of having near-surface ice in the area.
