What is the geometry of the accretion flow around black holes (BH)
and how does it change with the accretion state of the source?
I will discuss how the combination of X-ray spectral and timing techniques
is helping us to map the close environments of accreting-BH systems and
to shed some light on the physical conditions of matter during different
accretion regimes.
